Leading Through Hard Things with Christine Miles and Katharine Manning

I recently had the pleasure of joining Christine Miles on her Shine a Light podcast to talk about a topic that is at the heart of my work: trauma-informed leadership. We explored how leaders can respond more effectively when employees are facing difficult life circumstances, and why those moments can become opportunities to build trust, connection, and psychological safety.

One of the things we talked about was that those going through hard times don’t need us to have all the answers or to be fountains of wisdom. Often, being present and listening with compassion is the best support you can provide. A simple “I’m really sorry you’re doing through this” or “What do you need right now?” can have a significant impact.

We also discussed the connection between trauma-informed leadership and organizational success. Research consistently shows that psychological safety is one of the strongest predictors of team effectiveness. When people feel safe to share what’s really going on and ask for help, teams perform better across the board

Supporting people through difficult times isn’t just the right thing to do—it strengthens relationships, deepens commitment, and creates healthier workplace cultures.

If you’ve ever wanted to lead with empathy without overstepping boundaries, wished you knew how to better support someone who is struggling, or want to find ways to turn difficult moments into opportunities for connection, I think you’ll enjoy this conversation. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
