I would guess I’m not the only one who has been amazed at the leadership demonstrated by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky over the past week. There are a few things he’s doing that I think are good lessons for anyone called upon to lead in a time of crisis.

1. He’s sincere. He isn’t bragging or pretending that he is all powerful. He is open about his vulnerability. He’s speaking from the heart, without notes.
2. He’s clear. He’s not engaging in long soliloquies or rants. He uses plain, simple language, and repeats himself frequently. In times of crisis, it’s hard for us to process information. His simple language makes it easier for his people to follow and be comforted by his words.
3. He’s present. He shows up again and again. Even with short statements, he’s letting his people know that he is there. He is not abandoning them; he continues to stand with them.
